Evidence Based Project Literature Review - 1653 Words

Section C: Literature Support In order to have an effective evidence based project literature needs be gathered. Once that occurs the available resources need to be appraised. Several methods exist in order to properly appraise and evaluate the literature found for the projects problem and purposed solution. This paper will analyze research articles found with the use of the Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklist and the Evaluation Table Template provided by Melnyk Fineout-Overholt (2015). The following paragraphs will also discuss the description of search methods used, give a summary of the articles, and their validity in further detail. This will allow to see how this literature is pertinent to the following problem statement: P: In patients 65 years of age and older I: how does the administration of an influenza vaccine C: compared to not receiving the vaccine O: decrease their risks of developing pneumonia T: during flu season. Article 1 Castilla and colleges (2013) purpose was to find out how effective the influenza vaccine was during the flu season in preventing severe medical complications. It included hospitalized patients during 2010-2011 in 29 Spanish hospitals (Castilla et al., 2013). Individuals were matched by age, admission/visit date, and province (Castilla et al., 2013). Limitations of this study may include the fact that it was only conducted in the span of a year. Strengths include that it was conducted in 29 Spanish hospitals providing a larger population to study (Castilla et al., 2013). Results conclude that the influenza vaccine did prevented severe medical cases in these facilities (Castilla et al., 2013). Article 2 Since the pneumonia is a serious complication of the influenza Grijalva and colleagues (2015) wanted to evaluate the relationship between the influenza vaccine and pneumonia during the flu seasons.
