This isnt exactly weird, since it is still October, and the snow was pretty wet. What is weird is that last night (and today) were downright pleasant in terms of weather. I just dont get it. Anyway, I thought Id wrote a quick little entry here just to answer some questions that have been posed to me over the last week or so Timur said, I hear MIT even has a mailing list specifically to notify students of events that have free food. :) This is most certainly true. Im not personally on that particular mailing list, but I was planning to write a little feature about MIT mailing lists in the near future, so stay tuned! Mike asked, hey, just a question about athletics. I am interested in playing football at MIT. Are football practices from 5-7 as well? Thats really short! I havent had a chance to contact the coach yet. Im pretty sure all sports follow pretty much the same schedule. According to Section 2.12 of the Rules of the Faculty, no classes or tests can be scheduled during those 2 hours. If coaches decide to hold practices say, from 4-7, some students will have conflict with classes, and since the NCAA has really strict rules about Division III athletics, that can get really messy. I can also say that the field hockey and football teams often pass each other on the way into and out of the athletic center during those 2 hours. That said, next time I see Kevin 09, who lives next door to me and plays football, Ill be sure to check. =) In my entry about Woodie Flowers, Nehalita asked, Btw, how involved were you in FIRST as a highschooler? I actually only spent one year involved with FIRST. I started working with the team during my junior year because a friend of mine finally convinced me to join. I had a great time (go team 30!) but a whole list of unfortunate things happened to our team over the course of that year. We lost our corporate funding, our advisor was getting tired of the massive time committment, and our principal just kind of got rid of the whole thing. So our team died and I didnt get to participate during my senior year, which was pretty sad. But during that one year, I definitely became a core memeber of the build time (staying at school until 10 PM on the days leading up to Ship Day) In my entry about duct tape, Jonathan asked, Ok, just have to ask after the duct tape comment are you from Texas? and Im just going to assume he was talking to me so I can answer and not feel guilty for not responding to his question. As I mentioned just a minute ago in this entry, Im actaully from New Jersey. And what is it about duct tape that makes you think of Texas? Also, Merudh asked awhile ago about how his school doesnt rankto be perfectly honest, I dont even remember how I addressed this on the application. Im sure theres some box that can be checked that says school does not rank. I do know that I wrote up a small description of my high school/district and stuck it into that anything else? section of every application I filled out. Also, Id love to tell you my point of view about the MCVSD and MIT admissions, but it would be a waste to post it here, since it applies to exactly no one else. (Merudh and I went to high schools in the same district. We even met on a nerdy class trip.) I knew after graduating from GDLP, I learned the skills to become a good leader. I met a great speaker who was really inspirational and his speech really helped me create a new mindset in my head. I have experienced being a leader through playing on the Bryan High girls soccer team as a team captain, being a part of groups for class presentations, and being a youth leader in my church. Early or Rural Blues is probably the oldest form of blues we know. Dominated by men, it used strong vocals accompanied by instruments like theacoustic guitar, piano, and harmonica. It was usually performed by oneperson or a small group. This was a secular type of music focusing on theexperiences of everyday life of African Americans during the late 1800sand early 1900s. Its difficult to determine who the innovators of thistype of music were, because it grew mainly from field hollers, or worksongs, that set the pace for gang labor on slave plantations. Rural Bluesevolved into Urban Blues and Rhythm ; Blues, the forms of Blues that mostof us are familiar with today. W.C. Handy was one of the first musicians to take the tunes and styles ofthe Blues and present them in modern styles with bands and singers. One ofhis most popular songs was the St. Louis Blues. Urban Blues began to come into fruition during the Great Migration. Thisperiod, (1910s-1920s), saw a great number of Blacks moving from the Southto Northern big cities like Chicago and NewYork, and west to Los Angeles. In the move, African Americans carried the Blues with them. This was alsothe period when race records became popular. One recording in particular,Crazy Blues by Mamie Smith sold thousands of copies in the black ghettosof Northern industrial cities. Nature versus nurture; this is a common debate physiologists are in constant question over. In regards to the development of an individual’s personality, some believe that one is born with an innate personality. In the meantime, others believe that one’s personality is developed through experience over their lifetime. Both nature and nurture are major contributors to the development of characters in the story, Frankenstein. In Mary Shelley’s famous novel, Frankenstein, there is evidence that Shelley views Nature of being the more powerful component to the development of a personality. In the novel, Frankenstein, the main character, Victor Frankenstein, has a natural desire to learn everything he can about natural philosophy. When speaking of his childhood, Victor exclaims, â€Å"but by some law in my temperature they were turned not towards childish pursuits, but to an eager desire to learn†¦my enquiries were directed to the metaphysical or in its highest sense, the physical secrets of the world,† (Shelley 19). This statement shows that Victor is not worried about the opinions of society or those who are raising him; he knows that studying natural philosophy is his passion, and he plans to continue studying no matter what. Obviously, Victor does not have anyone to confide in when learning about his studies, therefore, there is no one in his environment who can influence him in this area, which defends Shelley’s view of Nature. Frankenstein acknowledges this and says, â€Å"I was, to a great degree, self-taught with regard to my favorite studies. My father was not scientific, and I was left to struggle with a child’s blindness, added to a student’s thirst for knowledge,† (Shelley 21). Frankenstein continues to stay dedicated to his studies even when he goes off to college. His values on learning are apparent when he says, â€Å"In other studies, you go as far as others have gone before you, and there is nothing more to know; but in a scientific pursuit there is continual food for discovery and wonder,† (Shelley 30). He continues to engage in his studies, and when working on his creation, he quotes, â€Å"I could not tear my thoughts from my employment,†(Shelley 33). Victor is so involved with his intellectual pursuit that he is not going to let society get in the way of being active in his scientific work. In the end of the novel, he tells Walton, â€Å"Seek happiness in tranquility, and avoid ambition, even if it be only the apparently innocent one of distinguishing yourself in scientific discoveries. Yet why do I say this? I have myself been blasted in these hopes, yet another may succeed,† (Shelley 163). Although Frankenstein feels that he did not accomplish anything in the scientific field, he still recognizes the importance of science, and urges Walden to stay true to himself, or his true nature, while learning from his mistakes in the meantime. The character of Victor Frankenstein is a character born to love science, and he continues to express this throughout the novel Mary Shelley uses examples that support the theory of nature upon Frankenstein’s creature. When the creature is observing the De Lacey’s, he cannot help but notice that there is sadness amongst the family. He cannot help but feel troubled by this; â€Å"I saw no cause for their unhappiness, but I was deeply affected by it,† (Shelley 77). The creature, in his benevolent nature, wants to help the small family, and decides, â€Å"I discovered also another means through which I was enabled to assist their labours†¦during the night, I often took his tools, the use of which I quickly discovered, and brought home firing sufficient for the consumption of several days,† (Shelley 78). The creature receives inner joy when performing such tasks for others, even though they are not even acquainted with him. The creature is soon shunned by the family though, and falls into utter sadness. Despite the unjustly expressions of others, the creature still feels good in him. He witnesses a young girl slip and fall into a rapid stream, and instinctively reacts by saving her; â€Å"I rushed from my hiding-place, and, with extreme labour from the force of the current, saved her, and dragged her to shore,† (Shelley 101). Unfortunately, the human race still does not respond kindly to the creature, which eventually makes him to behave maliciously. While speaking to his creator, Victor, he explains to him, â€Å"Instead of threatening, I am content to reason with you. I am malicious because I am miserable. Am I not shunned by all mankind? † (Shelley 104). The creature admits to behaving in an evil manner, and continues to do so. At the end of the novel, the creature shares with Walton, his feelings while behaving in such monstrous ways. While looking over the body of his creator, he says, â€Å"Oh, Frankenstein! Generous and self-devoted being! What does it avail that I now ask thee to pardon me? I, who irretrievably destroyed thee by destroying all thou lovedst,† (Shelley 163). The creature feels incredibly guilty for the evil acts, which he performed. This shows that the creature my have been behaving in a horrible manner, but in the end, he regrets it all, because he had been behaving in such a way that is against his good conscious and personality. He then reflects upon a few of the murders he committed, â€Å"After the murder of Clerval, I returned to Switzerland, heartbroken and overcome. I pitied Frankenstein,† (Shelley 165). The creature feels remorse after allowing himself to behave in a way that does not level up to his innate personality, or in other words, his true nature. The creature created by Frankenstein is born free and good, and although becomes temporarily corrupted by society, he proves to still contain his good aspects of his personality in the end of the novel. In Shelley’s novel, personality derived from nature, is strongly expressed through the character, Elizabeth. Victor Frankenstein describes her as being beautiful, peaceful, and gentle. He says, â€Å"The saintly soul of Elizabeth shone like a shrine-dedicated lamp in our peaceful home†¦she was the living spirit of love to soften and attract: I might have become sullen in my study, rough through the ardour of my nature, but she was there to subdue me to a semblance of her own gentleness,† (Shelley 20). Elizabeth is the type of person whose radiance and love brightens up everyone’s life. Victor is aware of this and knows he can rely on her to feel better no matter what, because her loving and uplifting personality seems to be in her own nature. This is also proven after her friend, Justine is accused of murdering their younger brother, William. She says to Victor, â€Å"I rely on her innocence as certainly as I do upon my own. Our misfortune is doubly hard to us; we have not only lost that lovely darling boy, but this poor girl, whom I sincerely love, is to be torn away by even a worse fate. If she is condemned, I never shall know joy more. But she will not, I am sure she will not; and then I shall be happy again, even after the sad death of my little William,† (Shelley 53). Elizabeth continues to remain optimistic even though fate in her environment seems to be turning against her. Near the end, when her and Victor are on their honeymoon, Victor senses that he will be greeted by death that night, and is nervously anticipating this event. Elizabeth can sense that something is troubling him; â€Å" ‘Be happy, my dear Victor,’ replied Elizabeth; ‘there is, I hope, nothing to distress you; and be assured that if a lively joy is not painted in my face, my heart is contented. Something whispers to me not to depend too much on the prospect that is opened before us, but I will not listen to such a sinister voice†¦What a divine day! How happy and serene all nature appears! ’ â€Å" (Shelley 143). Even though Elizabeth feels there is something wrong, she refuses to allow such environmental factors destroy that of nature and who she truly is as a person, which is comforting and positive. Although many characters portray the side of nature in the debate, Elizabeth is the character who represents this view the most. In the famous novel, Frankenstein, Mary Shelley uses evidence to suggest that nature is the more powerful component in the development of personality. The main character, Victor Frankenstein, loves scientific studies, and has had a legitimate interest since his early childhood. The creature that he creates is born to be good, and still proves to hold onto those good virtues towards the end of this novel. The character of Elizabeth is very caring and remains this way for the rest of her life. All three of these characters face horrid events in their lives, but in the end, they all prove to have the innate personality that they had been born with. It is very important that human research management to transform from being primarily administrative and operational to strategic partner. The reason is it important is because the human resource department plays a crucial role in determining the culture of an organization. Human resources promote and implement policies and procedures. The key areas are hiring practices, compensation, management relations and employee conduct and behavior. The decisions made by the human resources department will effect an organization in a positive or negative way. The areas that will feel the impact or challenges will be creating awareness, compensation plans, hiring practices and behavior. â€Å"The role of the Human Resource Manager is evolving with the change in competitive market environment and the realization that Human Resource Management must play a more strategic role in the success of an organization. Organizations that do not put their emphasis on attracting and retaining talents may find themselves in dire consequences, as their competitors may be outplaying them in the strategic employment of their human resources†. The human resources department can give the benefit of showing management what the culture is really like. What is revealed may lead to positive changes in the organization culture, it could also lead benefits that the employee’s need. The human resource office can also help management decide if there is a need for change or eliminate programs that are not necessary. The human resource depart is vital when it comes to compensation because it is responsibility for the design or layout programs for the organization. A lot depends on how well the human resource department does their job, such as the positive and negative impact on organizational culture. It is instrument that the HR department creates a plan with an incentive program for employees, which could motivate the employees and increase productivity. If productivity is up, then I believe they are headed in the right direction. The human resource department also determines the hiring and recruiting practices used by the organization, which has a great impact on the organizational culture. The relationships between a successful business and Human Resource Management have to be incorporated into an organizations plans and strategies to be able to maintain longevity of success. The history of the development of human resource management can be traced back to the early 1900s. Human resource manager’s original function was to basically manage the relationship between businesses and labor unions. Galbraith and Nathanson developed a model for the human resource management function that divided the human resource management function into four basic sub functions. The human resource management function was divided into seven parts. Human resource management are viewed as an essential part of an organization, also seen as a necessary to deal with labor unions. Human Resource Management focuses on securing, maintaining, and employing an effective work force, which organizations can strive. Human Resource Management involves a variation of activities, which include recruitment, and screening employees, preparing training needs, analyze human resource forecasts, compensation systems, and an understanding of the laws. The Human Resource Management function has evolved significantly since the early 1900. The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) was undergoing a renewal period. With renewal and change, it is essential for the human resource management function to adopt a strategic role in order to support and enable CSC ‘s business drivers. CSC is in the people business, and people and positive relationships comprise our most important asset; this is essential for fulfilling our public safety mandate. Every person at CSC has a role to play in helping to achieve the results set out in this Plan. CSC ‘s managers have shared accountability for these results. The Assistant Commissioner Human Resource Management is accountable for setting the foundation and people services that will enable managers to meet their business goals efficiently and effectively. The Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners, and managers and supervisor within their region or sector, are accountable for the implementation of good human resource management to provide a healthy workplace and ensure a productive and innovative workforce, and enabling learning and development. Employees are responsible for being a partner to create a healthy workplace, productive and innovative workforce, and for their learning and development. Regional support for the Plan will be assumed primarily by the Assistant Deputy Commissioners of Corporate Services. The Review Panel developed a set of recommendations to respond to issues that came out of discussions with frontline staff and to the underlying issues CSC must address in order to further the strategic priorities outlined in the Plan. As the Career Assistance Advisor, I work with the hiring officials and putting the proper individuals with the right job. There is a process that the Human Resource department has to follow and it is imperative that they get it right. Each year the military need individuals in certain positions that meet certain criteria fill jobs. The HR department at Randolph Air Force base has to work closely with organizations or units to fill their manning needs in order to support their mission. There is an analysis of manning done for each career field to determine if a position needs to be filled, once that is determine, HR department matches members with the location and job. Also, each year the Air Force determines that some career fields are over manned and some are short manned. This situation creates a need for hiring for the short manned career field to meet the Air Force retention goals. The HR department works with units to fill special duty, regular and chronic critical jobs. The HR department finds out the needs and requirements for the positions from the units. Then the HR department creates the advertisement and screens the applicants that apply to ensure that they make the right decision based upon the needs and requirements. The HR department must ensure that the applicants meet the requirements, because when they do hire the individual, there is a lot that follows. The first thing to follow in getting the individual trained which might require technical school. The next step is getting the member to the new job location, which both cost the government money to do. The HR department that I deal with on a daily basis does a thorough job of ensuring that the individual is even eligible, before they go any further in the process, so by doing so save the government time, money and resources.
